SJIEC 20th Conference ~ Annual Rose Kelly Teacher’s Panel ~ Windsor Community Children’s Centre

For those that participated in our 20th annual conference, you will have been inspired by the team at Windsor Community Children’s Centre. Through conversations they shared the history of social justice within the service as well as the leaders that inspired their continued work. Now you can rewatch the full conversation below as Sam, Jono and Alistair explore the concepts of “Mirrors, Windows and Glass Sliding Doors”.
Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of a larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books.”
~ Dr Rudine Sims Bishop
Those that attended our conference will have also been made aware of WCCC’s current focus after being given notice to vacate their service by their current landlord through the desire to rezone the land away from education and care. The service is in the throws of advocacy with submissions to oppose the rezoning due by 1st August. In a monumentous move, the local Stonnington council unanimously voted to support the service in opposing the rezoning. You can follow the service journey to stop the displacement of educators, children and families on their website.
We encourage readers to submit their response and support the service.
